Treadmills, cardio equipment, step masters . . . oh my!

By Jordan Rutz, Staff Writer –

Feeling a bit sluggish lately? No worries, because MCC has the perfect place to change

that – a fitness center and weight room available for all students and staff.

The fitness center is located on the second floor of the Bartels-Rode Gymnasium and the

weight room is on the lower level.

Both are open, friendly environments that allow any student or staff member to exercise

and unwind. On top of that, it is free.

“It’s just one of many benefits of attending MCC,” said Jody Miller, secretary in the

health, physical education and recreation (HPER) department. “It’s another incentive to come

here.”

Both the fitness center and weight room are perfect for busy students looking for a

cheap, convenient place to go before or after class.

Student work study jobs also are available for those interested in working at the fitness

center or weight room?

“Each semester we hire one or two students to cover open hours,” said Miller. “They

clean equipment and handle any issues in the facility,” Miller said.

The fitness center is equipped with many types of workout machines, including

treadmills, cardio equipment, step masters, and rowing machines. The weight room is equipped

with free weights.

With so much talk lately about the new Fitness Center opening in downtown Muskegon,

some might wonder what will happen to the current fitness center and weight room on campus.

“When the new facility opens downtown, classes will be held there and the facility on

campus will be used for more training and practice,” she said.

As the project of the new fitness facility is still underway, Miller said she still has people

ask questions as to what will actually be happening.

“I’m really excited for the new Fitness Center” said Miller, whose office is right below

the current fitness center on campus.

Julie Weiler, an adjunct faculty member who teaches in the HPER department said, “I

want to know what it is going to look like!”

The fitness center and weight room have somewhat unusual hours: Mondays and

Wednesdays, noon to 1:30, and 3-6 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3-6 p.m.; and Fridays 11 a.m.

to 1:30 p.m.

There is a good reason behind that, though.

“We are very limited on space,” said Miller. “That is why we have to work around class

schedules.
