New track and field team already setting records

By Levi Spring, Staff Writer –

The newly formed MCC track and field team is already in the record books of the

National Junior College Athletic Association.

Noah Hendricks placed 15th in the nation in the 600-meter run and Collins Kipocheck

took 23rd in the 800 at the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships held recently in

Pittsburg, Kansas.

Hendricks’ time of 1:20.91 set a new personal record. Also at nationals, Kipocheck

placed 23 rd with a time of 2:03.28 in the 800.

Hendricks is the first MCC track and field student-athlete to qualify for nationals. He

finished second in a field of 30 in the 600-meter event on Jan. 28 at Grand Valley State

His time of 1:22.36 beat the qualifying standard by 0.14 seconds.

“I could not be happier with the group of athletes that we have,” said AshleyGlover,

head coach. “They are willing to go the extra mile, and they are flexible. Every day they show up

and trust us – John Swinburne, the assistant coach, and I – to lead the charge. John and I have

the mindset that if you give us a space, we can make a workout and make athletes better. That’s

really helped us this season.”

Glover was quick to praise the team.

“It all comes back to the athletes,” Glover said. “They have helped us grow and learn.

They’ve made us better, so that we can put together the best program and leave a legacy for

years to come.

She added, “I think that this program is going to help so many students in the area, as

well as in the state, to have a stepping stone for success. MCC is a great college and to have the

opportunity to come to a college and compete is so great! It helps the students, all around, to be

Glover also attributed the early success of the track and field program as stemming from

the roots of the MCC cross-country team.

“Planning for this new program began a year ago with the cross-country coach Dan

Fischel,” she said. “He began to find area coaches who would make the best fit for the program.

That’s how I got here.”
